Physical activity is any movement performed by the body in a voluntary and repetitive manner that involves skeletal muscles and results in energy expenditure. Exercise, on the other hand, refers to physical activity that is planned, structured, and repeated over time to maintain or improve physical fitness.

Physical activity can help to:

  • Improve metabolism, burn calories, and maintain a healthy weight
  • Strengthen the immune system, muscles, and bones
  • Improve blood circulation and hormonal balance
  • Prevent diseases such as certain types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and others
  • Increase strength, endurance, and energy levels
  • Reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and inflammation
  • Foster social connections and a sense of personal independence
  • Improve sleep quality, posture, and overall quality of life
  • Reduce occupational risks and increase productivity

Examples of physical activity you can practice:

Moderate Intensity
Increases heart rate, causes a feeling of warmth, and may lead to light sweating
Vigorous Intensity
Greatly increases heart rate, causes intense warmth, and makes breathing more difficult
  • Brisk walking (15 minutes or more)
  • Light gardening
  • Dancing
  • Cycling
  • Household chores
  • Running or jogging
  • Playing sports (e.g., basketball, baseball, or soccer)
  • Swimming
  • Intense gardening

General Recommendations:

  1. Consult with your doctor about the type and amount of physical activity or exercise recommended for you.
  2. Adults should engage in 150 to 300 minutes of physical activity per week.
  3. Reduce the amount of time you spend being inactive.
  4. Start gradually and choose a physical activity you enjoy.
  5. Perform physical activity safely, avoid risks, and limit exposure to high temperatures.
  6. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing and apply sunscreen when exercising outdoors.
  7. Stay well hydrated and maintain a healthy diet.
  8. Inform a family member of where you will be exercising.
  9. If you must interrupt your routine for a while, do not get discouraged, resume when possible.
  10. Aim to be physically active every day, even when motivation is low.
