Women’s Health

Menopause is a natural biological process in women. It is defined as the time when 12 consecutive months have passed without a menstrual period, marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Menopause may also occur immediately after the surgical removal of both ovaries if hormone therapy (estrogen) is not taken.

The transition to menopause is called perimenopause. It usually begins in a woman’s 40s, although it can start earlier. During this stage, hormone levels fluctuate, and symptoms similar to those of menopause may appear. A woman can still become pregnant during perimenopause.

Common Symptoms:

  • Irregular menstrual periods (changes in blood flow, pain, and frequency)
  • Vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, and decreased sexual desire
  • Decreased bone density
  • Hot flashes, chills, sleep disturbances, and night sweats
  • Mood changes (irritability, depression, anxiety)
  • Weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, and slower metabolism
  • Loss of breast fullness, thinning hair, and dry skin
  • Memory or concentration difficulties

These symptoms may develop gradually due to hormonal changes, particularly decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Seek medical advice if you experience:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding that lasts longer than 7 days
  • Bleeding between periods

General recommendations for managing symptoms:

  • Eat a healthy diet: Helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, supports calcium absorption, and may decrease hot flashes.
  • Use water-based vaginal lubricants: Can reduce vaginal dryness, irritation, and discomfort.
  • Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a day: Supports overall health and well-being.
  • Practice stress-reduction techniques: Activities such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation can promote relaxation.
  • Stay physically active: Helps manage weight, improve mood, and strengthen bones.
  • Consider prescribed medications: Some treatments may help manage hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, or vaginal dryness. Consult your doctor about the most appropriate options for you.
